Heriot-Watt was pleased to welcome the newly appointed Under-Secretary of State for Scotland, Dr Ian Duncan to the Lyell Centre on Wednesday 5 July in one of his first official visits since taking up office.
Dr Duncan had specifically requested the opportunity to come to the University to meet with colleagues from the Energy Academy and the Lyell Centre.
Welcomed by Professor Garry Pender and Chief Scientist John Underhill, presentations from Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer, Professor Mark Schaffer and Professor Sebastian Geiger were very well received, with colleagues from the British Geological Survey, Dr Tracy Shimmield and Bob Gatliff updating Dr Duncan on their research in Energy and Marine Geoscience.
Speaking after meeting with Dr Duncan, Professor John Underhill said:
"It was excellent to have an early opportunity to engage with Dr Duncan so soon after his appointment.
“The visit provided an opportunity for us to showcase our scientific endeavours and technical expertise in Energy and Geoscience and included a tour of the Lyell Centre and introduction to the Energy Academy. Holding a Geology degree and a doctorate in Palaeontology, the minister was especially interested to hear of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering's aspiration to build further capacity in GeoEnergy"
