Heriot-Watt University Malaysia's Mechanical Engineering students recently competed in a line launcher competition in conjunction with the University's Year of Robotics. The competition is part of 'Design and Manufacturing' subject for Mechanical Engineering first year students.
Throughout the course the students are trained on how to design a working device using engineering principles and applications. They were then guided in methods to manufacture their design experimentally using CAD software and hands on machinery/apparatus, as well as being supported to develop and use their communication, teamwork, delegation and time management skills. The students were divided into smaller groups to participate in the competition, with each team required to think outside of the box and come up with a design which is both innovative and fully functional.
A total of 12 groups of students participated. Group 10 emerged as winners with their innovative design.
I aim to cultivate passion and dynamism among youth in engineering so that we can engineer solutions of tomorrow. The organisation and administration of inspiring and challenging competitions such as this one are an effective way to work towards achieving this.
Dr Al-Qrimli who initiated and led the competition added that he was delighted with the hard work of each group and the quality of all of the designs and congratulated the winning group for their excellence.
