Oriam, Scotland's Sports Performance Centre, has been shortlisted for a prestigious national engineering award.
The aim of Oriam is to provide our top sportsmen and women with the facilities, access and support services pivotal for successful performance on the international stage.
The Centre, which is celebrating its first birthday, has been shortlisted in the Institution of Structural Engineers Structural Awards 2017. It features in the Award for Long Span Structures section, awarded for structural engineering excellence in buildings (not bridges) incorporating particularly long spans, relative to the proportions of the structure.
Winners will be announced in London in November.
Meanwhile Scotland's first Sports Hotel, designed to accommodate sports people and sporting teams training at Oriam, is nearing completion at the Edinburgh Campus.
Specialist design
The four story Marriot hotel, due to open in the autumn, has been designed in conjunction with Oriam to ensure that it meets the needs of its sporting clients. It will feature extra-wide beds and specialist treatment rooms, with the top floor designed specifically to meet the needs of teams of sports men and sports women.
Melisa Hutcheon of Oriam said, “The aim of Oriam is to provide our top sportsmen and women with the facilities, access and support services pivotal for successful performance on the international stage.
”We have worked very closely with the hotel management group to ensure the accommodation is exactly what performance sport individuals and groups need.”
A feature of the hotel's construction is that it comprises individual modules, made in Poland, which are then slotted together on site.
