A team of Heriot-Watt petroleum engineers has won a place at the PetroBowl 2017 global finals, which will take place in San Antonio, Texas.
The Heriot-Watt Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter is the only team from the UK, and one of only three from Europe, to make it to the PetroBowl global finals in October.
PetroBowl is essentially the world championships for testing petroleum engineering students’ knowledge, and we are extremely proud that Heriot-Watt University is the only team from the UK that will be attending.
The PetroBowl competition pitches SPE Student Chapter teams against each other in a series of quick-fire rounds, answering technical and non-technical industry-related questions.
In addition to making it to the PetroBowl final, the Heriot-Watt SPE Student Chapter was recently awarded the Best Student Chapter Award by SPE Aberdeen at SPE Offshore Europe 2017.
Huzaifah Binn-Tahir, President of the Heriot-Watt SPE Student Chapter, said: “Our team qualified for PetroBowl at the regional heat in Poland, and thanks to generous sponsorship from Geo2Flow, the Adrian Todd Golden Key Student Fund, the Alumni and Development Department at Heriot-Watt University, SPE Aberdeen and Foundation CMG, we can make it to San Antonio for a chance at winning the final.
Professor Sebastian Geiger, Director of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, said: “Our SPE Student Chapter has been extremely proactive and committed to inspiring and challenging our MSc and PhD students, running networking events and community engagement activities, organising guest lectures and arranging field trips, and hence making a very positive contribution to the overall student experience at our institute.
“Their knowledge will certainly be put to the test at PetroBowl and the entire institute wishes them the best of luck – we will be keeping up with PetroBowl on social media to check their progress and send support.”
The Heriot-Watt SPE Student Chapter team is one of 32 finalists who will be competing in the PetroBowl Championship in San Antonio in October.
