Civil engineering students would benefit from seeking work experience as early as they can.

This was the advice that the UAE Regional Group of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) gave during a career advisory talk that it recently hosted at the Civil Engineering Department of Heriot-Watt University in Dubai.

We have focussed on the youth as they are the future of the UAE.

The group said in a statement that the event aimed to encourage civil engineering students to acquire work experience as soon as possible, with IStructE offering to help connect them with employers.

According to IStructE, the career advisory talk preceded its annual general meeting (AGM), which saw the group elect the members of its 2018 UAE Committee, in addition to presenting a report on its 2017 activities in the UAE.

Mohamad Khodr Al-Dah FIStructE, chairman of the UAE Regional Group of IStructE, commented: “We are proud of our achievements in the UAE this year, in terms of our specialised evening talks and Chartered Membership exam preparation courses.

“We have focussed on the youth as they are the future of the UAE.”

The AGM concluded with Dr Olisanwendu Ogwuda of Heriot-Watt University being presented with an IStructE Regional Group Award for his services to the engineering community.

The IStructE reportedly has more than 28,000 members working in 105 countries around the world.
