Heriot-Watt academics Professor Gerald Buller and Professor Ajoy Kar have been elected as Fellows of the Optical Society of America (OSA) in their 2017 Fellows class, which contained 96 new appointments from 19 different countries.
The 2017 Fellows reflect a diverse group of OSA members who are leaders in optics and photonics.
Fellows are selected on factors including specific scientific, engineering, and technological contributions, a record of significant publications or patents related to optics, technical or industry leadership in the field as well as service to OSA and the global optics community.
Elizabeth Rogan, CEO of OSA, said, “The 2017 Fellows reflect a diverse group of OSA members who are leaders in optics and photonics. It's an honor to recognize the 2017 OSA Fellows class for their accomplishments, achievements and continued contributions to our industry.”
Professor Gerald Buller, who is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the UK Institute of Physics, was awarded his OSA Fellowship 'for pioneering work in single-photon detection and applications of single-photon technology in three-dimensional imaging and quantum communications.
Professor Ajoy Kar, who has been a member of staff at Heriot-Watt for over thirty years, was awarded his OSA Fellowship 'for application of nonlinear optics to the development of photonic devices by ultrafast laser inscription. An extensive variety of devices developed include waveguide lasers, supercontinuum generators, Bragg gratings and sensors'.
Professor Buller and Professor Kar will received their Fellowship plaque at the CLEO 2017 conference in California in May 2017. Both Professors are members of Heriot-Watt's Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences.
