A new Formula student car has hit the tracks, designed and built by a team of engineering students from Heriot-Watt.

This is the first time the team has produced a vehicle which we're confident will be able to complete all of the competition stages.

A year in the making, HWR-06 has been built by the students in their spare time and will be entered in the Formula Student UK event at Silverstone in July.

The project was sponsored by the University and a range of local and national businesses including Chevron, and while at Silverstone the car will be put through its paces in a series of challenges including sprint, acceleration, skid pad and endurance.

Project Leader Lewis Crichton, a 5th year Mechanical Engineering student at Heriot-Watt, said, “This is the fifth year we've built a car to enter in the Formula Student event, but this is the first time the team has produced a vehicle which we're confident will be able to complete all of the competition stages.”

“We know we're up against stiff competition, with top-level teams coming from around the world, but our main aim was to encourage our engineers to get involved in this project in their own time, facing the challenge of designing and building a single seat racing car.  It's been hard work but great fun and a tremendous experience.”
