Calcium sulphate crystals (crystal balls)

The Centre for Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (CESEM) regularly analyses produced water filter papers for the oil industry, for the purpose of scale analysis.

The example above is a magnification of calcium sulphate crystals, from material provided by Nalco Champion, recovered from a produced water sampled from a North Sea production well under seawater flooding.

The image was entered to FEI’s 2014 micrograph competition, and won one of the prizes for December 2014.
