Representatives from academia, industry and government institutions gathered at Heriot-Watt’s Dubai Campus to mark the launch of a publication which will promote research and innovation that will serve Dubai and the UAE community.
A consolidated effort to unite the academic institutions and industrial partners in Dubai, towards a diverse and knowledge-based economy.
The newsletter, Research Connect @ Dubai, was launched by the newly established Research Steering Committee (RSC), of which Heriot-Watt is a member. It was backed by another group member, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). Its aim is to highlight original research and the research application in a wide range of academic institutions and industries in Dubai, to support the UAE’s growth towards Expo2020, and beyond.
Dr Sahel Al Rousan, from the Ministry of Finance, spoke at the launch event, highlighting the potential of Research in Dubai and some key government initiatives to boost Innovation in the UAE.
Research and innovation
The newsletter will rotate editorship and the first edition, with the theme of Sustainability, was edited by Heriot-Watt Dubai and Hult International Business School Dubai. Dr. Rehan Ahmed, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Dubai Campus, was the Chief Editor of the first edition.
“In view of the mission of RSC to promote the advancement of Research and Innovation, this newsletter demonstrates a consolidated effort to unite the academic institutions and industrial partners in Dubai, towards a diverse and knowledge-based economy. The articles presented in this newsletter are not exhaustive, highlight some of the core research topics in Dubai, ranging from Science and Engineering to Business Leadership and Corporate Social Responsibility.”
Dr Warren Fox, Chief of Higher Education at KHDA, which backed the newsletter, said, “Dubai is witnessing a great moment in higher education and research. Research Connect @Dubai will allow us to showcase research opportunities across Dubai’s campuses, ultimately leading to a stronger and more diverse economy.”
