The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University continued to demonstrate the outstanding quality and impact of its research in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) assessment of research quality in the UK.
In Mathematical Sciences the Maxwell Institute (joint submission with Edinburgh University) was ranked 5th in the UK and 1st in Scotland according to the power measure which takes account of volume and quality of research activity. The Maxwell Institute was also ranked 1st in Scotland for the proportion of its research that is world-leading and equal 1st in the UK for its world-leading and internationally excellent research environment.
Computer Science was ranked equal 1st in the UK for its world-leading and internationally excellent research environment and also for the impact of its research. The proportion of Computer Science research that is world-leading and internationally excellent has risen by 18% in the past 6 years and Computer Science is now ranked 3rd in Scotland according to the power measure.
In Business & Management (UoA19), where the Actuarial and Financial Group were submitted, the university consolidated its position achieved in RAE08 being ranked 38th out of 101 submissions across the UK and 34th in terms of the proportion of environment rated as world-leading.
