Fourth year student Clare Coulson, who is studying a BA hons in ‘Design for Textiles’, was awarded a Company Bursary of £2,500 for her submission to help support her final year project and third year PhD researcher of Medical Textiles Michelle Rae was awarded the Byford Bursary of £5,000 (for an outstanding application) to support her work into Anti-embolism Stockings, which help to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Michelle says that the award will help her to purchase materials and carry out specific testing which would otherwise have been very difficult to finance, while Clare said that the use of high quality yarns as cashmere, cashwool, silk and lambswool, which would not have been possible without the bursary, will be extremely beneficial to her collection.

Dr Lisa Macintyre, lecturer in Textiles at the School of Textiles and design, said, “Each year we are allowed to enter two students for these prestigious awards, and these entries may or may not be chosen to progress via an interview.

“We are delighted that this year both of our student entries not only progressed but were awarded bursaries, including a Byford Bursary for an outstanding application, which will be supporting important medically related research. Congratulations to both of them.”
