The Maxwell Institute Graduate School in Mathematical Analysis and its Applications (MIGSAA), a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) to be run jointly by Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh, has been launched at an event at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS).
The flagship Institute will train upwards of 60 PhD students over five yearly intakes securing the future of research postgraduate education in Mathematics, an area of vital importance to the Scottish and UK economies.
Keynote speeches were given by two very distinguished academics whose research areas are in the remit of the centre; Professor Keith Ball of the University of Warwick and Professor David Abrahams of the University of Manchester. David is the current Scientific Director of the ICMS and Keith is its immediate past Scientific Director. ICMS is a long-standing joint project of Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh Universities.
MIGSAA represents a £4.5M investment by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), together with the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University under the aegis of the joint Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences.
The CDT trains students to meet the needs of both academia and industry, supervised by staff from both universities. They graduate with a PhD degree awarded jointly by both universities.
