Heriot-Watt University Dubai and Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see both entities work towards promoting sustainable practice in the UAE.

The MoU will allow both the University and EGBC to collaborate on a range of educational and research initiatives which will develop environmental protection, as well as promote the Green Building concept.

Professor Wael Mualla, Associate Head of School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) at Dubai, said, “This MoU will allow Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus to develop competencies and skill sets in our students that will allow them to impact the building industry, not only through education and research but also by affecting change within our campus.”.

The collaboration will focus on sustainability in the building industry with programmes and events that instil the Green Building concept through the whole building supply chain.

Specifically, the MoU will allow EGBC to assist Heriot-Watt University Dubai to understand methods for reducing water and energy consumption, which will allow future building industry professionals to help reduce the UAE’s carbon footprint.

Through guest presentations, internships, applied research and EGBC input into curriculum development, the collaboration will attempt to raise the benchmark for the region’s building industry.
