Heriot-Watt Computer Science student Amanda Curry has been chosen to present her research at the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium next week at the University of Edinburgh Informatics Forum.
It's a great opportunity to represent Heriot-Watt at a national event organised by the British Computer Society, and to promote the work of women in computing.
The one-day conference for women studying computing, which is sponsored by Google, will take place on Thursday 9 April. The British Computer Society (BCS) fosters links between experts from industry, academia and business to promote new thinking, education and knowledge sharing.
At the event Amanda will present a poster on the research she has been conducting for her dissertation and is relishing the opportunity to show other students, academics and industry professionals the research she has undertaken.
Her research is about improving the directions given by SatNavs and programs like Google Maps. She is investigating ways to make them more human and easier to follow by using features such as landmarks and local shops, in the same way a person would give directions.
“I'm very excited to have been chosen for this opportunity. It's a great opportunity to represent Heriot-Watt University at a national event organised by the British Computer Society, and to promote the work of women in computing. I got some great feedback from the organisers based on my abstract and I'm looking forward to presenting my research.”
