A Heriot-Watt academic is among the winners of the British Academy Rising Star Engagement awards.

Alan Gow, Assistant Professor of Psychology, has been awarded £14,939 for Rewrite the Headlines, a project engaging young people in evaluating research coverage in the media.

It will allow us to develop and launch this exciting new competition which will take our work to a newer and younger audience.

Alan is Co-chair of Research the Headlines, a blog which forms the basis for this new competition-based project. He’ll be running the project in collaboration with Dr Sinead Rhodes, University of Strathclyde, Co-chair of Research the Headlines, and a number of colleagues from the RSE Young Academy of Scotland based at institutions across the country.

He said, "On behalf of Research the Headlines, we're delighted to have been awarded this funding from the British Academy. It will allow us to develop and launch this exciting new competition which will take our work to a newer and younger audience. Our hope is that Rewrite the Headlines will develop into an annual competition, to engage young people in how research is portrayed in the media.”
