Scholarships, travel bursaries and internships are among the activities that Heriot-Watt University will benefit from as part of the partnership agreement with the Santander Universities Global Division.
International exchange
The three year agreement, which amounts to £40,000 per year for a three year period with an additional £16,700 to support internships in the first year, will focus on international exchange, entrepreneurial activities and travel requirements of students and researchers within universities that already partner with Santander.
The partnership will also enable Heriot-Watt to develop and strengthen collaborative links internationally as well as create new opportunities for staff and students.
We are delighted to welcome Heriot-Watt University as a new UK partner. This partnership will allow students to study and carry out research overseas as well as give them the chance to take a first step in the job market
The funding, which was secured by Heriot-Watt's Development & Alumni Office, will enable current students in receipt of a bursary to progress to post-graduate study as well as offering travel bursaries for PhD students to visit overseas universities which are partners of Santander Universities.
The support will enhance the student experience, provide support and opportunities for students and staff to broaden their research activities and, through further developing the University's international network, help to translate research into practical application.
The agreement was signed by Professor Steve Chapman, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University and Simon Bray, Director, Santander Universities UK.
Entrepreneurial activities
Professor Steve Chapman said, "Entrepreneurism is key to all of Heriot-Watt's teaching and research, underpinned by an international network of strong relationships with business and industry. This agreement with Santander Universities exemplifies both of these elements, and we are delighted at the additional support and opportunities it offers to our students and to research staff."
Simon Bray, Director, Santander Universities UK, said, "We are delighted to welcome Heriot-Watt University as a new UK partner. This partnership will allow students to study and carry out research overseas as well as give them the chance to take a first step in the job market. This is a long term agreement which will bring a wealth of benefits to the University."
