PhD student Alan Faulkner-Jones, from the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering, has been nominated in the Inspirational Individual category of the 2014 3D Printshow Global Awards.
The 3D Printshow Global Awards acknowledge inspirational work that has helped develop and elevate the art of additive manufacture, as well as those businesses that have risen to the challenges of the marketplace, flourishing in what is a highly competitive industry.
Alan is part of Professor Will Shu's Biomechanical Microengineering Group at the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The team has been exploring options for 3D Live cell printing. His work has involved developing innovative valve-based cell printing platforms. The system that he has created is able to print highly viable cells in programmable patterns, using up to four different bio-inks.
