Heriot-Watt student Jamie Hearle has been named as one of the UK's brightest young engineers after winning a prestigious scholarship.
Jamie, who is studying an MEng in Industrial Engineering (Chemical), has won the Whitworth Scholarship Award which will contribute £2,500 per year towards his Chemical Engineering degree at Heriot-Watt University.
Jamie has proven himself to be one of the best young engineers in the UK and I was delighted to present him with the Undergraduate Scholarship.
The Scholarship was presented to just 14 of the top engineering students in the UK at a ceremony at the Institution's headquarters in London.
Group Commander Mark Hunt, President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said, "Jamie has proven himself to be one of the best young engineers in the UK and I was delighted to present him with the Undergraduate Scholarship.
"At a time when the UK is facing a huge skills gap when it comes to young engineers, it's fantastic to see young people like Jamie taking their first steps in the profession.
"Engineers are vitally important to the UK economy. They design and develop everything from the cars we drive to the medical equipment used in our hospitals.
"I am confident that Jamie will enjoy a successful and exciting career in engineering."
Jamie, who is also part of the Engineers of the Future project, said "I am delighted to receive the award and at the recognition of my work which it entails. I hope I might be able to continue an association with the Whitworth Society after I graduate."
