Confucius Institute welcomes new colleagues

Professor Steve Chapman, Principal of Heriot-Watt University, welcomed Professor Wen Xiuying and Ms Zhai Li from China to the Edinburgh Campus on 12 November.

Professor Wen, a Chinese Co-Director, and Ms Zhai, a Chinese teacher, from our partner institute Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (TUFE) are Hanban sponsored staff to support our work at the Confucius Institute, which was officially opened at Heriot-Watt University's Edinburgh Campus in June 2014. Hanban, the umbrella organization for Confucius Institutes, is responsible for promoting Chinese learning and language across the globe.

As part of their visit, Professor Wen and Ms Zhai will meet key University colleagues and will start to observe some classes so they can experience Heriot-Watt teaching practices and prepare for teaching which will begin from January 2015.

The Scottish Confucius Institute for Business and Communication

The Confucius Institute, the fifth Confucius Institute in Scotland, aims to help Scottish companies to engage with China and increase the provision of Chinese language learning for business purposes.

It builds on Heriot-Watt University's well-developed China strategy to help forge new partnerships; attract more well-qualified students to study in Scotland and help foster joint research collaborations across Heriot-Watt University.
