The Heriot-Watt University Student Chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers recently hosted a formal Burns Supper for students, faculty members and petroleum industry professionals. The sold out event was on held at the Ghillie Dhu, a 200 capacity Scottish themed venue which proved to be a perfect compliment to the kilts sported by some of our guests.
The evening started with the dramatic piping in of a haggis, followed by a recital of Robert Burn's 'Address To a Haggis' then the traditional stabbing of the haggis. During the course of the evening there were inspirational speeches from Crawford Anderson, Managing Director of Baker Hughes, and Ian Phillips, Business Development Director at Pale Blue Dot Energy Limited and Director of SPE Aberdeen section, who as a Heriot Watt alumnus was especially honoured to be addressing the current class of MSc Petroleum Engineering students. The evening ended with an energetic ceilidh (of traditional Scottish dance) where everyone danced away into the wee small hours.
The SPE HWSC would like to thank Baker Hughes (Gold Sponsors for 2014) and the Institute of Petroleum Engineering for kindly sponsoring this event.
