Dr Robert M Buchan installed as Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University

Dr Robert M Buchan, mining entrepreneur, philanthropist and Heriot-Watt graduate, has been installed as Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University at a ceremony at the University's Edinburgh Campus.

Dr Buchan, a Scot now based in Canada, is a widely admired international business figure with a passion for advancing scientific research into addressing the key energy sustainability challenges facing the world today.

Professor Steve Chapman, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University, said, "Dr Buchan is a graduate of Heriot-Watt University whose career exemplifies the entrepreneurship which is key to our degree courses. He is also keen supporter of higher education and a noted philanthropist who has donated generously to a range of educational institutions.

"As an alumnus of the University and a widely admired international business figure, Dr Buchan will bring to the position of Chancellor his extensive entrepreneurial experience and his passion for higher education and advancing scientific research. He will be an inspiration to our students."

Dr Robert Buchan said, "It is a privilege and an honour to serve as Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University.

"I gained my first degree at Heriot-Watt, and what I learned here provided a foundation for my career and the development of my business. I believe in giving forward rather than giving back. It may sound like a small difference, but it reflects a desire to focus on what is needed in the future. I am thus delighted to be able to return here as Chancellor where I can help to encourage, support and hopefully inspire new generations of students and future entrepreneurs."
