Dr Doug Harris from the School of the Built Environment recently gave the keynote address at the SENVAR (Sustainable Environment and Architecture) conference in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
Dr Harris spoke of how the concept of sustainability has developed since the term was introduced in 1987, and of how our awareness of the impact of our activities on the environment has increased.
The visit also included a tour of sites affected by the tsunami of 26 December 2004 and visits to post-tsunami housing and escape buildings designed to offer refuge in case of another inundation.
