The School of the Built Environment's fifth years MEng Civil and Structural Engineering students went on a week-long field trip to Barcelona led by four key SBE academics. The students undertook a series of studies, most of which were intensively tutored by staff and local engineering contacts.
Barcelona is an excellent venue for civil and structural engineering tours as it has a wide range of structures - both historic and modern. The Catalan approach to engineering is different from that in the UK and students are asked to observe, analyse and discuss these differences.
Students critically observed structures, in order to understand how they work and how the structural issues integrate with the architectural issues. Although the study tour workload is kept intentionally high, student feedback on the tour was very positive.
