Professor Steve McLaughlin

Professor Steve McLaughlin has been announced as the new Head of the School of Engineering & Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University. He will take up his post on 1 October 2011.

Professor McLaughlin moves to Heriot-Watt University from his current position as Dean of Research in the College of Science & Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. He is also Director of the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering and Mathematics.

Professor McLaughlin began his career as a Development Engineer at Barr and Stroud before moving on to MEL Ltd and then to Edinburgh University.

He has held a number of academic positions within Edinburgh University including that of Director of Research and Deputy Head of the School of Engineering. He studied at both the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers.

Welcoming his appointment, Professor McLaughlin said, "I am looking forward to taking up my appointment with great enthusiasm and to help the School to grow and develop its research from an already strong foundation. The School has an excellent combination of Engineering and the Physical Sciences which enable it to have a unique perspective on solving research problems with the resultant solutions delivering significant benefits to its major industrial partners."

Professor Steve Chapman, Principal of Heriot-Watt University, said, "I am delighted Steve is joining us at Heriot-Watt. He will bring strong vision and leadership to the School. I am very much looking forward to working with him on our University's ambitious plans for the future."
