Professor Alan McKinnon, Director of the Logistics Research Centre, has been appointed to three Expert Groups set up by the European Commission to provide advice on transport issues.

The first group comprising 10 transport experts from different European countries, was formed at the request of the EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas to provide independent advice on the preparation of the European Commission's new Strategic Transport Technology Plan. This Plan, which is being developed to support the recently published EU transport policy white paper, will be published this summer

The second Group has provided the Commission with feedback on the transport research funded under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) and advice on the transport and logistics content of the forthcoming 8th Framework Programme (FP8) which will run from 2014 to 2020. Professor McKinnon was appointed the 'Rapporteur' of this Group.

The third Expert Group is examining 'support instruments' that the European Commission can apply to encourage the use of intermodal transport and logistics services within the framework of its Trans-European Transport Network programme.
