2011 graduations at Heriot-Watt University

The Heriot-Watt University Graduations come to an end today. Taking part in the ceremonies were a number of Honorary Graduates.

Heriot-Watt University's 2011 Honorary Graduates included:

Mr Rory Bremner

Mr Rory Bremner, impressionist and comedian. He was awarded a Doctorate of Letters at the Scottish Borders Campus in recognition of his distinguished contributions to broadcasting and entertainment as an impressionist, comedian and translator.

Dr Sandy Dobbie

Dr Sandy Dobbie, Chairman of Chemical Sciences Scotland. He was awarded a Doctorate of Science in recognition of his distinguished career and his outstanding contributions to the advancement of the chemicals industry internationally.

Professor Ian Halliday

Professor Ian Halliday, former President of the European Science Foundation and Chief Executive of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA), was awarded a Doctorate of Science in recognition of his leading contributions to physics and to the advancement of science internationally.

Mr Robert McCrum

Mr Robert McCrum, Associate Editor of the Observer was awarded a Doctorate of Letters in recognition of his significant literary achievements and, through his writing, the promotion of public understanding of the English language and its place in the modern world.

Ms Irene Adams

Ms Irene Adams, international Scottish business woman and Director of Inchmarnock Ltd. She was awarded a Doctorate of Letters in recognition of her distinguished career and her outstanding contribution to international business development.

Mr Robert Buchan

Mr Robert Buchan, entrepreneur, philanthropist, Executive Chairman of Allied Nevada and a director of the Buchan Family Foundation. He was awarded a Doctorate of Engineering in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the field of mining engineering and his work and philanthropic support for the development of new higher education opportunities internationally.

Professor Richard J Parker

Professor Richard J Parker, Director of Research and Technology at the Rolls Royce Group, was awarded a Doctorate of Science in recognition of his leading work in the development of optical technology and his leadership of research in high technology manufacturing.

Professor Dr Paul Embrechts

Professor Dr Paul Embrechts, Professor of Mathematics at ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) Zurich. He was awarded a Doctorate of Science in recognition of his pioneering contribution to the advancement of actuarial mathematics and quantitative risk management.

Mr Jonathan Speirs

Mr Jonathan Speirs, international lighting architect and founding member of Speirs and Major Associates, was awarded a Doctorate of Science in recognition of his contribution to architecture and his outstanding achievements internationally in the field of architectural lighting design.
