Civil engineering students from Heriot-Watt University recently took part in a model building competition run by the Institution of Structural Engineering (IStructE).
The School of the Built Environment hosted the challenge, which took place throughout the afternoon and also involved teams from Edinburgh, Glasgow Caledonian, Edinburgh Napier, Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities.
Each team had three hours to build its load-bearing structures before judges from IStructE tested them with various weights. Points were awarded for the models that could take the most weight but which had been built with the least materials.
The eventual winner, by a very close margin, was the team from Strathclyde University.
