Dr Martin Paterson, Lecturer in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (School of Engineering & Physical Sciences) has been awarded a grant of €1.35 million (£1.1 million) from the European Research Council.
The grant, entitled "Photoinduced Chemistry: Development and Application of Computational Methods for New Understanding" involves studying fundamental interactions between molecules and light using theoretical and computational methods.
In addition to developing powerful new techniques, studies will focus on the fundamental chemistry of photodynamic anti-cancer therapies, understanding and developing novel sensors, and simulating the complex behaviour of light induced chemistry in metal containing systems important in many aspects of modern technology.
