Flooding research from China

A lecture on flooding research in China was presented at Heriot-Watt University recently by Professor Zhixian Cao of the School of the Built Environment.

His talk covered China's various issues with flooding such as urban flooding, flash flooding, dam and dike break flooding and coastal flooding. These issues have the potential to wreak havoc and huge social, economic and environmental damage.

Professor Cao also discussed how the Chinese Government has recently implemented a strategic shift in tackling flooding, from flood control toward flood risk management. His lecture presented the latest hydrodynamic research on flooding along with its connection with sediment transport.

The topical discussion drew in around 45 visitors made up of contacts from industry and colleagues from Heriot-Watt University.
