Heriot-Watt's growing stature in the sporting sector has been given a major boost.
Its new MSc Sport Psychology programme, launching this September, has received accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS).
The BPS represents psychologists across the UK and promotes excellence in research, education, and practice. Programmes must meet eight critical standards to be awarded BPS accredited status, a highly regarded marker of quality and valued by prospective students.
Professor Pete Coffee, Director of the new MSc, said: “MSc Sport Psychology at Heriot-Watt University is unique in its approach to help students connect theory to domains of practice.
"Our Edinburgh campus is stunning and with Scotland's Sport Performance Centre on site, students have all they need to succeed.”
BPS accreditation gives graduates a route to Society membership, an integral part of their development as psychologists.
The MSc Sport Psychology is part of the University's strategic development of sport-related activities. It is delivered by expert Sport Psychologists with extensive collective experience in practice, research, leadership, and teaching.
Led from the Department of Psychology, the programme benefits from a wealth of experience and a wide range of psychological expertise. It also adopts a novel approach, designed around contemporary themes to locate the learning of students within principal contexts of sport psychology. These include team sport, community sport, individual sport and elite sport.
Students will eventually graduate with an awareness of how knowledge translates to practical, real-world scenarios. All assessments in the programme are synonymous with future employability requirements including reflective practice or the development of psychological resources.
MSc Sport Psychology capitalises on world-leading sports facilities and resources at Oriam. Students will observe and work in partnership with practitioners, coaches, and athletes as they develop their skills.
Applications to join the MSc Sport Psychology can be submitted online from September.
