Postgraduate Interior Architecture and Design students at the School of Textiles and Design (SoTD) recently teamed up with the Energise Galashiels Trust to work on a live industry project in support of their local community.

The project ‘Heartland of the Borders’ will see a new community hub being created in the town which will include a visitor centre, an exhibition space, display local crafts and workshop areas.

The project will complement the opening of Scotland’s iconic new Tapestry Museum in Galashiels.

“The students will be front and centre in designing this space on behalf of the community,” said Course Leader Alya Rizvi.

They have gained inspiration for their designs via talks from guest industry speakers Kristin Hibbs, Head of Design at the London Science Museum, and Aleksandra Hannah, Founder of the design company Skela Studios.

Recently, the students pitched their ideas to Mark Gray, Chair of the Energise Galashiels Trust:

“My grateful thanks, on behalf of Energise Galashiels Trust, to all the students for the amazing design concepts that have been developed. There has clearly been a great deal of effort and thought gone into the concepts and it has certainly been thought-provoking for me.”

The Energise Galashiels Trust will include the students’ designs in their annual review and will select the best concepts to include in the new community hub development.

The SoTD are excited to see the final project come to life.
