Yap Yuen Kiat
Roles and responsibilities
Mr Yap is Assistant Professor for Foundation Programmes.
During his PhD studies, he was responsible for the generation of ultrafast laser pulses using 2-dimensional nano-materials, which are currently undergoing rapid growth for application in medical surgery and industrial material processing. His research also combined the use of 2-dimensional materials in planar lightwave circuit, particularly on the fabrication, characterization and performance of broadband light polarizer. His current research interest include amongst others: nano-photonics, high power lasers, short pulsed lasers, fibre optics communication, and non-linear optics.
Besides being enthusiastic in teaching, Mr Yap is a active research member at the Photonics Research Centre - a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence at the University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur). Highlights of recent work include planar waveguide humidity sensor with fast response of < 1 s, and optical switching and modulation in planar waveguide. On-going work include low threshold Q-switched fibre laser and sub-femtosecond mode-locked fibre laser.
Mr Yap has a cumulative 10 years of experience in education industry, mainly in Teaching & Learning. He has taught fundamental physics for a wide range of pre-university programmes such as the South Australian Matriculation, EDEXCEL and Cambridge A-Levels, Victorian Higher School Certificate, Canadian Pre-University etc. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree (Hons) in Physics. He pursued Master of Science degree in Medical Physics, specializing in medical radiation dosimetry and theoretical nuclear physics.
Upon appointment at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, he has completed Doctor of Philosophy degree studies - majoring in Optics, Lasers and Photonics.
