Roles and responsibilities

Thomas Arthur Ward is an Associate Professor from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS)


Tom holds a PhD (Mechanical Engineering), two MSc (Aerospace and Systems Engineering) and a BSc (Aerospace Engineering) from universities in the United States and United Kingdom. He is a Certified Engineer (UK), Fellow in IMechE, Senior Permanent Member of AIAA, and Chartered Member of IEM. His expertise is in aerospace systems, propulsion, alternative energy systems, and thermofluids. Prior to Heriot-Watt University in 2016, he was employed for 18 years by the US Air Force as an aerospace engineer and 10 years as a Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor at the University of Malaya and Universiti Teknologi MARA (Shah Alam), respectively. He led to completion four fully-successful and highly-funded research projects (as the principal investigator) dealing with the design of biomimetic micro air vehicles (BMAV) and hydrogen fuel cell powered aircraft. He has published numerous journal and conference papers and one internationally published text book titled: Aerospace Propulsion Systems. He has also led many student teams competing in the Shell Eco-marathon, winning 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals, and a Best Malaysian Team award. Additionally he has won numerous other US Air Force and research awards, medals, and certificates.
