Award Objective

The overall objective of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is the holistic development of young people through participation and recognition in the four sections of the Award: Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, Skills and Adventurous Journey.

Through non-formal education in a range of community settings, the scheme equips all young people for life regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests. Doing the Award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others; it pushes young people to their personal limits and recognises their individual achievements.

The EmPOWER programme at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is one of the initiatives that embeds Positive Education practices and philosophies. Partnering with The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award extends further opportunities for our EmPOWER students to be part of an established global community and receive an internationally-accredited award.

Award Sections

The Voluntary Service section encourages young people to volunteer their time to and understand the benefits of this service to their community. Be inspired by what our students have achieved!

The Physical Recreation section encourages young people to participate in sport and other physical recreation for the improvement of health and fitness.

The Skills section encourages the development of personal interests and practical and social skills.

The Adventurous Journey section encourages a sense of adventure and discovery whilst undertaking a team journey or expedition. As part of a small team, participants plan, train for and undertake a journey with a purpose in an unfamiliar environment.
