Jock Clear: Honorary Doctor of Engineering

Jock Clear is one of the leading engineers in Formula 1, working as senior performance engineer at Mercedes with drivers Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and previously Michael Schumacher. He has worked in the industry as a design engineer since he graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering. Jock was further awarded with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering from Heriot-Watt in 2007.

"Heriot-Watt University had a very human approach to teaching a very technical subject, which is rare. It remains one of the top engineering universities because it pursues quality not quantity, and stays in touch with its students and the industries they go into.

"Teams have engineers looking at all aspects of the car in detail but the performance on the track is more than the sum of its parts. As a performance engineer, I am juggling all those parameters to arrive at the best overall solution - the race outcome is a result of performance and reliability. We have had a number of Malaysian students working with us, due to our sponsor links, and they are very well received and considered to be amongst the brightest."
