The time is now because of unprecedented levels of internet enabled connectivity coupled to inexpensive computing power on a chip and research advances in sensing, planning, control, human interaction interfaces and certification. The talk will describe some of the advances underway in research and innovation from the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics, and the cross sector applications including the newly created ORCA Hub - Offshore Robotics for Certification of Assets, and competition podium success in the Amazon Alexa Challenge.

Staff, students and visitors are warmly invited to attend this year's Vice-Chancellor Distinguished Lecture at Heriot-Watt University's Dubai Campus.
The lecture, entitled; Delivering Transformational Innovation from Robotics and AI Engineering, will be delivered by Professor David Lane, Founding Director of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics at Heriot-Watt University.
Worldwide attention is focusing on robotics, autonomy and AI as the next technological wave to increase national productivity and competitiveness across a full range of sectors. Self driving vehicles, inspection and maintenance in hazardous environments, assisted living for the elderly and disabled, reconfigurable manufacturing, robot assisted surgery, warehousing, nuclear decommissioning, crop maintenance and harvesting, search and rescue and mining automation are just some examples - the technological advances are affecting everything that moves.
