Organic waste management and terrestrial end uses
Strongly allied to the terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and biogeochemistry theme, here we focus on microbial process driven solid waste and wastewater treatment and end-uses.
We are active in research on aspects related to brownfield site investigation and (waste) soil remediation. We have a growing portfolio of research and consultancy related to production of ‘quality’ compost and anaerobic digestate from separated organic waste.
We also, through collaboration with the engineers, are involved in multidisciplinary research around both potential problematic and beneficial microorganisms in municipal and specialist wastewater treatment processes.
This work builds upon a long history of applied microbiology at HWU and there are strong synergies with the molecular ecology and microbial biodiversity expertise found in the marine microbial ecology and biotechnology theme.
