A postgraduate student has been given a massive boost after being awarded a world-renowned Lindores Scholarship.

Max Baillie an MSc student, will now use the Scholarship to begin the Brewing and Distilling programme at Heriot-Watt University.

The star scholarship was awarded through Lindores Abbey Distillery based in Fife, after Max completed a three month stint working in the distillery.

After working at the distillery for the past three months, I am delighted to receive this scholarship.

The course at Heriot-Watt covers a wide range of subjects, such as brewing science, chemical engineering, business studies and production management.

Students are then well prepared and knowledgeable for a career in the brewing and distilling industries.

Speaking about the award, Max said: “It’s given me a real feel for the industry and what it is like to work in the growing sector.

“This course is going to help enormously with progressing my future career.”

Andrew Mckenzie Smith, founder and MD of the distillery, added: “We have been delighted to have Max with us for the past few months, he’s been a great asset and I’m confident he will do great things at Heriot-Watt with whom we’ve built a great relationship.

"We’ve had MSc students carrying out research on projects for us from Aqua Vitae to Wild Yeasts and everything in between.

“Going to university is costly at any time and we hope that this just helps the initial burden of buying the necessary books and paying for membership of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.”
