Husna in London

The year 2019 began with a big bang for Heriot-Watt University Malaysia student Nurul Husna Mohd Yusoff, who was one of the lucky few selected to participate in the Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) programme in London last month. The 21-year-old Chemical Engineering student also had the distinction of being the youngest participant at the event.

The Fellowship attracts the brightest entrepreneurial engineers from all over the world, and Husna felt honoured to have been a part of it.

“To be honest, I did not expect it as I was up against top researchers, lecturers and entrepreneurs. I am, therefore, grateful for this opportunity and took it as a personal challenge to get out of my comfort zone.”

According to Husna, the two-week fellowship programme not only provided her with exceptional networking opportunities with fellow innovators and entrepreneurs but also good exposure and experience. “I was very happy to be part of the LIF family!” she exclaimed enthusiastically. “It was definitely an eye-opening experience for me as a student, and I’m glad to have met the enthusiastic and passionate participants, all of whom were keen to gain knowledge and make an impact on society.

“In fact, I have to say that the best part of the programme was the people – the participants, mentors and trainers. We bonded over sharing knowledge and solving problems together as we inspired each other to improve on our skills,” she declared.

When asked what she had learned from her stint during the LIF programme, Husna shared: “Innovating is not about making money but how it changes the world. LIF showed me that if you create something that does not help or contribute to society in any way, it is of no value!”

Husna continues to be dedicated to giving to communities in need and hopes to inspire others to be even better than she is.
