Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) / MEng

Programme information

The programme covers the main civil engineering disciplines of Structures, Geotechnics, Water Engineering, and Highway Engineering, and provides students with the key analytical and practical skills and knowledge required to become chartered civil or structural engineers.

After graduation, students are equipped to work for consultants, contractors or government at senior management level.

The core curriculum includes instruction in all main subject areas, concentrating on analysis and materials behaviour, with increasing focus on design and management in the specialisation years. Throughout there is emphasis on the personal development of students within a professional environment.

First year

Students study courses that are common across the programme including:

  • Mechanics
  • Construction Technology and Processes
  • Civil Engineering Applications

Second year

Expands on the basics of the first year, with subjects such as:

  • Hydraulics and Hydrology
  • Civil Engineering Materials
  • Design

Third year

Is concerned with engineering principles and includes courses such as:

  • Transportation Engineering
  • Design of Concrete and Steel Elements
  • Modelling Engineering Systems
  • Surveying and Monitoring in the Built Environment
  • Geology and Geotechnics

Fourth year

Students complete a research dissertation and engage in subjects in more depth. Courses include:

  • Water and Wastewater Treatment
  • Introduction to Indeterminate Structures
  • Transportation Engineering

Students also undertake a design project that involves collaborative work with students from other disciplines within the built environment professions.

Fifth year (MEng only)

Students undertake a four-course research dissertation and build upon the studies from the fourth year and apply it to the social and environmental impact of civil engineering. Students also undertake a civil engineering professional project.
