Managing Your Money

Managing your money while you're studying at university is not always easy, but we can give you advice to help you budget realistically for your lifestyle and avoid getting in to hardship or debt. We’ve also produced a guide to give you an idea of how much you can expect to spend: How much money will I need to survive?

Student Hardship Funds

If you get into financial difficulty come into Student Support and Accommodation as soon as you can. We provide advice on budgeting and credit control and also have access to hardship funds.

UK students

There are two funds:

Discretionary Hardship Fund

The University receives money every year from the Scottish Government to assist students who have got into financial difficulty. Money is awarded for help with living costs (not fees) and is paid as a grant. The fund is discretionary. To be eligible you must:

  • be a registered student either full or part time
  • be in receipt of a student loan
  • provide evidence of your financial situation through up to date bank statements
  • demonstrate that you have tried to budget your finances

Childcare Fund

UK full time students can apply for assistance to pay formal registered childcare costs.

International students

The University has set up its own fund to assist international students who get into financial difficulty. Money is awarded for help with living costs (not fees) and is paid as a grant. The fund is discretionary and limited. To be eligible you must:

  • be a registered student
  • provide evidence of your financial situation through up to date bank statements
  • demonstrate that you have tried to budget your finances
  • demonstrate that you have experienced exceptional circumstances which have affected your financial situation
