The Disability Adviser asks to meet with all disabled students prior to the start of their course. This is to ensure that the appropriate support systems can be put in place as quickly as possible. Students may be referred to the Dyslexia Adviser or the Technology Adviser for particular advice or support. External organisations such as RNIB or RNID might also be contacted for specialist advice on individual students.
Each School within the University has at least one contact staff member who has particular responsibilities for disabled students. The Adviser liaises regularly with these staff members and also with mentors and tutors to co-ordinate the support for all disabled students.
The Technology Adviser has responsibility for ensuring that disabled students are made aware of the enabling technology provided by the University and the key support staff who will be available to deal with any future queries and support needs.
A Resource Centre is available to disabled students in the Library where students have access to such facilities as software for screen reading, magnification, mind mapping and producing written text. Scanning, printing and braille embosser and CCTV facilities are also available in addition to full email and internet access. Students can arrange for a demonstration of the full range of facilities through the Technology Adviser and receive training on request.
Visit the DisabledGo website for detailed information about disabled access to Heriot-Watt University.
