Set up monitoring platforms (Google alerts, socialmention.com, technorati, twitter search, radian6) and start listening to:

  • key public figures
  • mentions of the University/school/department
  • popular industry and advocacy sites
  • newsgroups
  • blog comments
  • other universities

Find out what people are talking about and how they're engaging with their audience. Who is doing it well and who isn't? What can you learn from them?
