Website visitor statistics

Understanding better how people interact with our website is one of the goals of the web project. Visitor data is collected using Google Analytics, a powerful free tool for capturing and analysing visitor information. Every webpage generated by the Content Management System has the Google Analytics code in place and ensures data collection is better managed across the website.

What sort of information is measured?

Visitors

  • number of visitors
  • new/unique and returning visitor numbers
  • pages viewed
  • time spent on the site
  • the countries and cities where visits originated
  • pages where visitors exit or 'bounce'.

Traffic sources

  • visitors coming via search engines
  • search engines used
  • search keywords used.

Content

  • top content
  • top landing pages
  • navigation summary
  • exit pages.

How is the information used?

  • Performance monitoring: visitor statistics or analytics data is used to monitor the performance of key parts of the site and to investigate areas that are not performing as expected.
  • Assess change requests: statistical information is used to assess the business need and priority of web requests submitted to the team.
  • Inform page layout decisions: in some cases the success of individual page elements can be assessed and changed if the statistical data supports such a change.
  • Inform navigation decisions: if the statistics indicate that the user journey has problems because visitors are leaving prematurely or unexpectedly, the sequence of pages can be changed to something that works better.

Statistical reports

Statistical reports on areas of the site can be generated upon receipt of a request. Regular reports via email can also be arranged.

Alternatively, if you have a regular need to check performance data, visitor access can be enabled to the analytics account.
