Content creation

Writing for the web

Writing and editing for the web are not the same as for print.  You need to apply different skills and techniques on line to attract and retain your readers, get your message across effectively and achieve your business objectives.

To help you develop your web writing skills, we have produced two handy guides which include useful tips on how to plan your web content more effectively and improve the readability of your online text to ensure you meet our agreed editorial standards for web content:

Content organisation

Developing a website without a clear idea of how your content is organised is like trying to design a house by moving pieces of furniture around a building site. All content needs a home.

To develop a clear structure for your content, often called an "information architecture", you first need to understand what you want to achieve with your website and who your audiences are. From here, clear categories emerge and the task then is to make sure these categories are suitable for the content that needs to fit inside them.

We can help you with the process of analysing your needs, audiences and content to ensure it is effectively organised, relevant and easily navigable and accessible to the user.

Editorial assistance

Through the use of a Content Management System (CMS), we aim to delegate ownership of, and updates to content, to trained, approved editors across the university.

There are currently a number of editors in schools and professional sections who have access to existing local applications to make updates to web pages. However, until the CMS is fully implemented across the university, with trained editors in place, and where it is currently not possible for local editors to make changes, members of our web team are able to provide editorial assistance.

Please send your requests to ithelp@hw.ac.uk. Requests received will be prioritised and you will be notified of turn around time.

Multimedia content

Users expect to find multimedia content on a website to support and supplement traditional media of text and images. Working with a film production company, the Web team has produced videos for the website to support recruitment and we are currently working on further developments in this area, including podcasts. If you would like advice and support on multimedia production, please contact us.
