Outgoing students

Living and studying abroad is a unique experience that will give you a distinctive international profile and great memories.  It offers a great opportunity to travel and live in another country, and to make new friends and contacts. By immersing yourself in a different culture and overcoming the challenges that living and studying in a different environment brings, you will find yourself growing in maturity, confidence and self awareness.

We have exchange agreements with a number of institutions around the world.  If you are studying an undergraduate or postgraduate programme at Heriot-Watt University and would like to study abroad, check our Exchange Partner Institutions list.
Before deciding where to study, it is important to do some research first.  Questions that can be considered are as follows:

  • Do I want to immerse myself in the culture of the country/speak the language?
  • Do I enjoy a challenge?
  • Would I prefer to be in a large or small town / institution?
  • What are my interests and hobbies outside of study?
  • Do you prefer to study in a large University or a smaller University?
  • Do I want to be where other Heriot-Watt University students are?  Would this make me less inclined to make new friends?

Take your time to browse through our website and the list of Frequently Asked Questions.  If you can't find the information you are looking for, please contact Sue Moore/Eileen Wallace, Institutional Exchange Co-ordinator on Outexchange@hw.ac.uk

For information about exchange links for your subject, contact the Exchange Coordinator within your school.

Your School Exchange Co-ordinator and the Institutional Exchange Co-ordinator (IEC) will support you throughout your application process.

Here you can also find a list of your support network.

Students Going Abroad in 2013/14

You will be about to go on your placement abroad and we wish you the best in settling into your life abroad.   The following forms must now be completed.  Throughout your placement, please remember check your University e-mail account regularly to keep it active, and please read all forms and communications received very carefully.

Please submit the following forms to the IEC before the end of this semester (please submit as soon as possible thereafter):

BANK DETAILS - This form is relevant for Erasmus students to ensure grant funding is placed into the correct bank account.  If students know their bank details before they go away, this can be provided now with the above documents.  It is preferable that this document is handed in or faxed to the IEC for security, as opposed to sending by e-mail.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMME SUMMARYThis form is relevant for Erasmus students and is necessary to confirm where students will be studying and whether they have received Erasmus grant funding in any previous year.

EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAILS - This form is relevant for all exchange students and is required so that the University knows which family members can be contacted whilst away. Any changes to these contact details must be communicated to the IEC.

These documents can be sent by fax, e-mail to Outexchange@hw.ac.uk or post to the IEC.

Please ensure that photocopies of all your completed exchange forms are kept prior to sending them to the IEC.

A Study Abroad Handbook is under production at present and will be forwarded out to you over the summer.  This Handbook will act as a handy guide during your placement, providing timelines which take you through each step of what is required from you at various points in the year.
