Postgraduate Academic English 2010
I would highly recommend this course for students intending to study at University whether as undergraduates or postgraduatesKhalid Aljuayed
I started Academic English at Heriot-Watt in January 2010. Since I started the course I have learned a lot of academic vocabulary, which means my skills in academic writing have improved considerably. I have also been taught how to read efficiently and identify necessary information from difficult academic texts.
On the course they teach how to write academic essays and I have learned how to paraphrase other people’s ideas effectively. I have also learned some tips on how to search for what I need in the library as well as construct an annotated bibliography. My listening skills have increased greatly too and I have learned how to take notes by going to lectures and training my ear to identify academic words which I then use in speaking practice.
I feel that I have improved so much since I joined the course, I would highly recommend this course for students intending to study at University whether as undergraduates or for postgraduate studies.

Postgraduate Pre-sessional English 2010
As a MSc student I have found what I was taught in that course extremely useful in my current degreeMohamed Elmahroug
I count myself lucky that I attended the Pre-sessional English course at Heriot-Watt: the tutors and students were great.
As a MSc student I have found what I was taught in that course extremely useful in my current degree. Research skills, for instance, at the master’s level an enormous amount of an academic writing must be done in order to achieve it successfully. This cannot be met easily if you do not have the necessary academic research skills which I have been taught in that particular course.
In addition to the academic programme there is the social programme, which I liked most. Actually, the School of Management & Languages has a fantastic social programme and it is very popular among students. They have a wonderful organiser, who is working very hard on it and I really enjoyed the programme.
I am truly grateful to all the tutors, students and staff members I met at the school for their help, interest and encouragement at that time.

My tutors gave me so much assistance during this academic year and helped me in many different aspects of my university experienceMariarosaria Zaccaro
My tutors gave me so much assistance during this academic year. I appreciate the information and advice they have given, as well as the opportunities to feel more part of the university and the Scottish environments. Their expertise and help have been invaluable during this period.
My tutor helped me in many different aspects of my university experience (my English, my general knowledge, my self-esteem) and inspired me to continue learning with an open and positive mind.

So far, I am having a very good time at Heriot-Watt University, each lecturer is doing their best to help us to improve our English level and study skill. In this case, we could be well prepared for the next year of learning.
Apart from this, the social activities in Heriot-Watt University are really good. The weekly trips organised by the foundation English social organiser gives us a very good chance to know about Edinburgh as well as Scotland.

They prepare us for academic study by explaining academic vocabulary and the way of writing and listening and taking notes.Mohammed Alhejaili
We have really good teachers who have experience and know the subject matter well.
They prepare us for academic study by explaining academic vocabulary and the way of writing and listening and taking notes. They help us to guess the meaning of words we don’t know and provide vocabulary support from one lesson to the next. They also teach us how to deal with tutorials and how to send emails.
The trips are useful to help us to know more about history of Scottish cities. We can get more information about the culture, society and customs. The outings also help us to relax.
I started volunteering and met a lot of people. I started to know a lot about the society here, a lot of Scottish people, what they like and they dislike, and this helps me to take positive things out.
One of the benefits of volunteering is that I get experience that will help me when I go back home to work. I have also learnt about the different working systems and structures used here in Scotland and the differences in Scottish organisations. It’s good to be active in the society and to help people in the community.
