Preparing for study

Programme handbook

Your School or Institute will give you a programme handbook, which contains detailed information about your School/Institute and department, and the structure and delivery of the programme you are studying.

Information Services


Our campus libraries offer the perfect study environment, with a variety of study spaces for individual and group work plus wi-fi, networked PCs, printing/scanning/copying, as well as all the books, journals and study materials you'd expect (online and print).

Our IT services provide PC labs, wi-fi, printers/copiers/scanners, the virtual learning environment (VISION), email and free and discounted software.  Our IT helpdesks offer a friendly and knowledgeable drop-in support service.

Audio Visual Services

Our AV services support and maintain lecture theatres and teaching rooms at the Edinburgh Campus.  Information on your timetabled lectures, tutorials etc. and their location are available from teaching timetables.

Skills development

Information Services offer a comprehensive skills development programme to support your studies and help you succeed at University.

Our programme of workshops (Power Hours) offer a range of topics covering information, research, study and IT skills with online materials available in the Power Hours Workshops organisation in VISION.  Comprehensive guides are available to introduce you to key resources and specialist staff available for you to consult such as the Effective Learning Advisor and the Academic Support and Liaison Librarian for your School.


Study preparation for international students

Prepare for Success is an interactive online learning tool for international students who are getting ready to come to the UK for study in further or higher education. It contains learning resources to help you find out about different aspects of academic life in the UK and the skills needed for effective study.
