Joel Kruithof: Languages
The LINT degree provides an excellent insight into the various types of interpreting, as well as into translating a wide variety of texts, all taught by interpreting and translation professionals. I have gained a solid understanding of the theoretical underpinnings behind interpreting and translation and have also done a course on the background to international organisations, politics and economics. As such, I'm now equipped with the necessary skills to pursue a career in a variety of sectors, either in interpreting and translation or in other graduate jobs.
The weekly spoken classes really help to build up my confidence and fluency in the languages. I was given the opportunity to use my interpreting skills in a real-life setting during the weekly mini-conferences and the annual Multilingual Debate. I also interpreted for the European Commissioner for Multilingualism during his visit to Heriot-Watt.
The compulsory third year abroad was an excellent opportunity to improve my cultural awareness and linguistic ability
The compulsory third year abroad was an excellent opportunity to improve my cultural awareness and linguistic ability. Through living and studying abroad I became completely immersed in another culture and learnt so much, but effortlessly.
In summary, despite the current poor economic outlook and jobs climate, the LINT degree has prepared me very well for life after university and I've secured my first translation job in Sheffield, working on contracts for major German car manufacturers.
