Brittany Brown: Economics & Business Law

3rd year

The course was right, the campus was beautiful and I would be living in the Scottish capital: Heriot-Watt was perfect for me

Why I chose Heriot-Watt

I had always had the ambition to go to University, but when it came to deciding where, I really didn’t know! Whilst I was studying my A-levels, a careers fair was held in which academic and professional institutions were invited to attend; the Heriot-Watt stand immediately caught my eye. The man I spoke to was so enthused about the place, I decided I must visit! I attended an open day and totally fell in love with the campus. It was a beautifully sunny day and the surroundings seemed so perfect for study!

I then attended an extremely inspiring talk from those in the Economics department. The course sounded interesting but, most importantly, exactly what I wanted to do. The course was right, the campus was beautiful and I would be living in the Scottish capital: Heriot-Watt was perfect for me.

What my degree is about

Studying Economics & Business Law, I have the opportunity to learn about the legal structures of a business and the frameworks of legislation they must adhere to, whilst also understanding how the business operates through microeconomic study and how the business then fits into the industry, through macroeconomic study. My programme teaches me economic theory and its application through the study of different courses. Some are very mathematical based whilst others are very theoretical: I am currently studying a course which teaches me the history of economics, dating back to evolution! My law courses teach me the most up to date legislation applicable to businesses operating today.

Career plans

I want to experience business opportunities all over the world, exposing myself to different cultures and taking on new challenges. Currently, I am hoping to secure a summer internship for next year, where I further hope to gain new skills, which will prove invaluable to me when applying for graduate jobs. In the future, I would like to study at postgraduate level. Hopefully I can come back to Heriot-Watt!
